Political relations

The Republic of Serbia attaches great importance to relations and cooperation with Montenegro, especially in terms of economic cooperation and infrastructure projects.

The Prime Minister of Montenegro, Dritan Abayović, visited the Republic of Serbia on 29 and 30 June 2022, while the former First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Ivica Dačić, visited Podgorica on 16 and 17 January 2018.

Economic relations

The Republic of Serbia is the first foreign trade partner of Montenegro in both exports and imports. Also, Serbia is Montenegro's main foreign trade partner in trade among CEFTA countries. In the period January-July 2022, exports of goods to Montenegro amounted to 636.13 million euros, and imports of goods from Montenegro amounted to 63.43 million euros.

Trade in goods in 2021 amounted to 900 million euros (exports were 820.61 million euros, and imports 79.41).Trade in goods in 2020 amounted to 751.55 million euros (exports were 687.13 million euros, and imports 64.41 million euros).

Investments: According to the NBS data, from 2014 until today, the net outflow of investments in Montenegro has been 224.3 million euros (in 2016 alone, the net inflow of direct investments from Montenegro to Serbia has been 54.4 million euros). In terms of Serbian investments in Montenegro, they are estimated to amount to about 400 million euros. Bearing in mind that there are over 1500 companies registered in Montenegro, whose founders are legal or natural persons from Serbia, the Serbian-Montenegro Business Club was founded in October 2011, which brings together 120 strongest Serbian and Montenegrin companies.

Bilateral agreements

The Republic of Serbia and Montenegro signed 60 bilateral agreements, of which the following are singled out:

  • Agreement on Economic Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Montenegro, signed on 29 October 2009,
  • Agreement on Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Montenegro in the context of accession to the European Union, signed on 10 December 2013,
  • Agreement on Cooperation between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Montenegro on Mutual Representation and Provision of Consular Protection and Services in Third Countries, signed on 19 April 2013,
  • Defence Cooperation Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of Montenegro, signed on 20 November 2007.
