USEFUL INFORMATION

HEALTH SITUATION — The provision of health care is far below European and American standards. Hospitals are not air conditioned. Emergency medical care is slow. Emergency medical services are rare in smaller places, thus medical care must be sought in Paramaribo, the capital of the country. Travel insurance is required.

For current information on the health situation in Suriname, visit the World Health Organization website: https://www.who.int/countries/sur/

SECURITY SITUATION — Security in Suriname is problematic, as there is only a small number of police forces outside tourist destinations. In tourist centres, one should also be aware of pickpockets and robbery on the streets and in shopping malls. Burglaries are also quite common.

TRANSPORT — Public transport is operated by minibuses and taxis. Tourists are advised not to use minibuses because the drivers are unreliable. Taxis are often unmarked and do not have a taximeter. It is necessary to agree on the fare before entering the vehicle.

Citizens of the Republic of Serbia may drive in Suriname with their Serbian driver's licence and an official translation of the licence into Dutch.

OTHER INFORMATION — Currency: Suriname dollar (SRD).
