140 years of diplomatic ties between Serbia and Venezuela were marked in Caracas

11. Aug 2022.
Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Serbia and Venezuela Nikola Selaković and Carlos Faria signed in Caracas a Joint Declaration setting a new date of establishment of diplomatic ties between the two countries.

The declaration sets 13 April 1882 as the official date of the establishment of Serbia–Venezuela diplomatic relations, given that on that date King of Serbia Milan Obrenović and President of the United States of Venezuela Antonio Guzmán Blanco exchanged diplomatic letters.

After the ceremony of solemn signing of the declaration and in honour of marking 140 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries, a reception was organised for distinguished guests and members of the diplomatic corps, at which Ministers Selaković and Faria spoke.

After thanking for the organisation of the extraordinary event, Selaković pointed out that 140 years was an impressive period, during which many important events have taken place for the two countries, and he also emphasised that Serbia and Venezuela would continue to improve their relations and put an effort to make them even better.

The Minister said that, despite a large distance, Serbia–Venezuela relations and friendship were something that bound them together, especially stressing that they were based on respect for basic principles and principles of international public law.

“Serbia does not forget the solidarity and support that Venezuela has provided to it in the most difficult moments”, emphasised Selaković, adding that Serbia valued the active support of Venezuela in all international organisations, in which this country provided clear support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia.

Minister Selaković said that the last Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia was in Caracas 12 years ago, and he was sure that the next visit would not be long, the next meeting would take place in the next 12 months.

“Long live the friendship and brotherhood of Serbia and Venezuela,” concluded Selaković.

Minister of Foreign Affairs of Venezuela Carlos Faria expressed his satisfaction that Minister Selaković made an official visit to Venezuela, especially in the year that marks the 140th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations.

Faria also stated that few countries could boast of such long cooperation.

“The solidarity, friendship and support that the two countries show to each other make us proud, not only the officials, but also the people of Serbia and Venezuela,” the Minister said, expressing the hope that  such friendship between the two countries and peoples would continue in the coming years.
