Bilateral Political Consultations between Serbia and Benin

05. May 2026.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Dušan Kozarev, and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Benin, Franck Armel Afoukou, led bilateral political consultations held in Belgrade.

It was emphasized that Serbia’s cooperation with African countries is rooted in the traditional ties established during the era of the Non-Aligned Movement and reflects the vision of the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, to engage with the world on an equal footing through a balanced foreign policy approach. It was noted that relations between Serbia and Benin are entering a new phase of development, significantly bolstered by the exchange of official visits by the two countries’ foreign ministers—Minister Marko Đurić and Minister Olushegun Adjadi Bakari—after nearly four decades. Both sides expressed a strong commitment to further advancing the partnership and translating cooperation into concrete initiatives.

Views were exchanged on key bilateral issues, with a particular focus on strengthening political dialogue and economic ties, deepening cooperation in defence, agriculture, education, culture, and sport, as well as on the importance of more frequent contacts. Special attention was given to scholarships for students from Benin within the “World in Serbia” programme and to cooperation between the diplomatic academies of the two ministries.

The successful implementation of the agreement on visa abolition for holders of diplomatic and official passports was welcomed.

A close alignment of positions on global issues was reaffirmed, based on consistent adherence to the Charter of the United Nations, respect for international law, and a commitment to the peaceful settlement of disputes. In this context, Kozarev briefed his interlocutors on the challenges faced by Serbs in Serbia’s southern province.

The importance of enhancing cooperation and coordination within international organisations was also underscored, including through mutual support and the harmonisation of positions on matters of shared interest. The interlocutors further discussed regional and continental integration processes in both countries.

Kozarev expressed gratitude to the Republic of Benin for confirming its participation in Specialised Expo 2027, noting that the project is of exceptional developmental significance for Serbia, driven by strong infrastructure expansion, modernisation, and the development of new facilities.

Following the meeting, the delegations of the two ministries visited the Museum of Yugoslavia and the Museum of African Art, where they had the opportunity to familiarise themselves with the rich cultural and historical heritage and art collections, and to continue discussions in an informal setting on prospects for further enhancing cooperation.
