Political relations
Diplomatic relations between Serbia and Luxembourg were established in 1956. Bilateral relations are very good. A high-level political dialogue has been developed between the two countries. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Serbia, Nikola Selaković visited Luxembourg, 16-17th of September 2021. In 2019, visits were made at the level of the Prime Minister. The Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, visited Serbia in May 2019, and the Prime Minister of Serbia, A. Brnabić paid a return visit in September of the same year.
During her visit to Luxembourg in September 2019, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, was the guest of honour at the celebration of the Liberation Day of Luxembourg in the Second World War.
The President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, decorated Prime Minister Xavier Bettel during the celebration of the Day of Reconciliation in the First World War, 11 November 2020, with the Order of the Republic of Serbia on ribbon, for exceptional merits in developing and strengthening peaceful cooperation and friendly relations between Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
Economic relations
The economic relations between the two countries are good, but there is room for their further improvement, both in the field of trade and in the form of investments. In the period January-October 2021, the total exchange amounted to 23,2 million euros, (exports amounted to 3,4 million euros and imports amounted to 13,6 million euros). In 2020, trade amounted to 23,1 million euros, of which exports amounted to 8.8 million euros, while goods worth 14,3 million euros were imported.
According to the data of the National Bank of Serbia for the period from 2010 to 2018, inflows from investments in Luxembourg to Serbia amounted to almost 1.85 billion euros, which gave Luxembourg the third place on the list of countries with the largest investments in Serbia in that period. In the first quarter of 2019, the investments of Luxembourg residents amounted to 69.5 million euros (4th foreign investor this year).
The largest exporters to Luxembourg are: Smart Renta Car d.o.o, Tarkett doo Bačka Palanka, Luxplast 58 doo, Profili Lux doo, Unipromet doo Čačak, Tetra Pak Production doo Belgrade, Eloxal Company doo Novi Pazar, Vossloh Min Skretnice doo Niš, Tehnal.
The most important importers are: Tetra Pak Production doo Belgrade, IGT doo Čačak, Vossloh Min Skretnice Niš, doo Balkan progres Kruševac, Afrohim & Kemoipex doo, Mondi Šabac, Teklas Automotive Vladičin Han, Zoppas Industries Serb doo, Thyssenkrupp Materials, Odnova doo.
Bilateral agreements
So far, 23 international legal acts have been signed between the Republic of Serbia and Luxembourg. The most important are:
Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Governments of the Benelux countries on the abolition of visas for holders of diplomatic and official passports,
Protocol between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Governments of the Benelux countries (Kingdom of Belgium, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Kingdom of the Netherlands) on the implementation of the Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the European Community on the readmission of persons residing without authorisation,
Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on social security with an administrative agreement, Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on the avoidance of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and on capital,
Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Academy of Public Administration of the Republic of Serbia and EIPA Luxembourg - European Centre for Judges and Lawyers, as a branch of the European Institute of Public Administration.
