Political relations
Bilateral relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg are assessed by both sides as excellent and friendly, with a shared understanding that there is further scope for their continued enhancement. Diplomatic relations between the two countries were established on 23 August 1927, and 2027 will mark a significant anniversary – the 100th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The two countries maintain a well-developed high-level political dialogue.
The then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, visited Serbia in September 2015, May 2011 and September 2009.
The then Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Nebojša Stefanović, visited Luxembourg in November 2012. On that occasion, he met with the then Grand Duke Henri, Speaker of Parliament Laurent Mosar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn, then Mayor of Luxembourg City Xavier Bettel, and Minister of Labour, Employment and Immigration Nicolas Schmit.
The then Minister of the Interior, Ivica Dačić, visited Luxembourg in May 2011.
The then Minister for Migration and Humanitarian Aid, Marie-Josée Jacobs, visited Belgrade in April 2012 and met with the then Minister of the Interior, Ivica Dačić.
The then Minister of Justice, Félix Braz, visited Belgrade to attend the ministerial forum “EU and the Western Balkans” in December 2014.
The then First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ivica Dačić, visited Luxembourg in May 2015, where he met with Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn.
The then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, visited the Republic of Serbia on 28–29 March 2017. In addition to meeting with First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Ivica Dačić, he held talks with the then Prime Minister Aleksandar Vučić and First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior Nebojša Stefanović.
The then Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, visited Luxembourg on 9–10 September 2019. On that occasion, she met with the then Grand Duke Henri, Prime Minister Xavier Bettel, Speaker of Parliament Fernand Etgen, President of the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce Luc Frieden, and Mayor of Luxembourg City Lydie Polfer.
During her visit to Luxembourg in September 2019, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Serbia, Ana Brnabić, was the guest of honour at the commemoration of Luxembourg's Liberation Day, marking the country's liberation during the Second World War.
The then Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, visited the Republic of Serbia on 30–31 May 2019, where he met with the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, and Prime Minister Ana Brnabić.
On 11 November 2020, during the commemoration of Armistice Day marking the end of the First World War, the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, awarded Prime Minister Xavier Bettel the Order of the Republic of Serbia on a Sash, in recognition of his exceptional contribution to the development and strengthening of peaceful cooperation and friendly relations between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
The then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Nikola Selaković, visited Luxembourg on 16–17 September 2021. In addition to meeting with the then Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jean Asselborn, he also held talks with the then Prime Minister, Xavier Bettel.
The then Prime Minister of Luxembourg, Xavier Bettel, visited the Republic of Serbia together with the then Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, on 3–4 July 2023.
At the invitation of Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Xavier Bettel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Marko Đurić, attended an informal dinner on 24 June 2024, held on the occasion of the meetings of the EU Foreign Affairs Council (FAC) in Luxembourg.
Economic relations
The economic relations between the two countries are good, but there is room for their further improvement, both in the field of trade and in the form of investments.
According to data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia, the total trade exchange with Luxemburg in 2025 amounted to €57.2 million, of which €18.9 million referred to exports from the Republic of Serbia and €38.3 million to imports.
The largest exporters to Luxembourg are: Smart Renta Car d.o.o, Tarkett doo Bačka Palanka, Luxplast 58 doo, Profili Lux doo, Unipromet doo Čačak, Tetra Pak Production doo Belgrade, Eloxal Company doo Novi Pazar, Vossloh Min Skretnice doo Niš, Tehnal.
The most important importers are: Tetra Pak Production doo Belgrade, IGT doo Čačak, Vossloh Min Skretnice Niš, doo Balkan progres Kruševac, Afrohim & Kemoipex doo, Mondi Šabac, Teklas Automotive Vladičin Han, Zoppas Industries Serb doo, Thyssenkrupp Materials, Odnova doo.
Bilateral agreements
So far, 26 international legal acts have been signed between the Republic of Serbia and Luxembourg. The most important are:
Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Governments of the Benelux countries on the abolition of visas for holders of diplomatic and official passports,
Protocol between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Governments of the Benelux countries (Kingdom of Belgium, Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and Kingdom of the Netherlands) on the implementation of the Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the European Community on the readmission of persons residing without authorisation,
Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on social security with an administrative agreement, Agreement between the Republic of Serbia and the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg on the avoidance of double taxation with respect to taxes on income and on capital,
Memorandum of Cooperation between the National Academy of Public Administration of the Republic of Serbia and EIPA Luxembourg - European Centre for Judges and Lawyers, as a branch of the European Institute of Public Administration.
