Political relations
Bilateral relations between the Republic of Serbia and Federal Republic of Germany are very good. There is an active political dialogue with developed cooperation in many areas, especially in the field of economy and culture. About 232,000 thousand Serbian citizens live in Federal Republic of Germany, and if we take into account the second and third generation of Serbian immigrants, between 500,000 and 700,000 people of Serbian origin live in Germany.
The Chancellor Olaf Scholz visited Belgrade on 10 June 2022, where he had a meeting with the President Aleksandar Vučić. President Aleksandar Vučić visited Germany from 4 to 5 May 2022, where he held meetings with the Chancellor Olaf Scholz and the Ministar of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock. The Ministar of Foreign Affairs Annalena Baerbock visited Serbia on 11 March 2022. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of Germany H. Mass paid the official visit to the Republic of Serbia from 22 to 23 April 2021. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia N. Selaković paid the official visit to the Federal Republic of Germany from 3 to 4 March 2021. At the invitation of Chancellor Angela Merkel, from 17-19 September 2019, the Prime Minister Ana Brnabić paid a bilateral visit to the Federal Republic of Germany. The modern diplomatic relations between the two countries began to develop after the unification of Germany and the independence of the Kingdom of Serbia after the Berlin Congress in 1878.
Economic relations
An important aspect of bilateral relations between the Republic of Serbia and Federal Republic of Germany is the extensive economic cooperation, which is constantly on the rise. Germany is the most important trade partner of the Republic of Serbia, one of the most significant investors and the biggest donor.
In 2021, the trade amounted to about 6,51 billion euros (+22,5%), of which Serbian exports amounted to 2,74 billion euros (+24,9%) and imports amounted to 3,77 billion euros (+20,8%). In the first four months of 2022, bilateral trade continued to grow strongly, with the total trade exchange amounting to about 2,49 billion euros – an increase of 25,7% in comparison with the same period of 2021. The export of Serbia amounted to 1,13 billion euros (+ 32,6%) and the import to Serbia from Germany amounted to 1,36 billion euros (+20,6%).
Bilateral agreements
So far, the Republic of Serbia and the Federal Republic of Germany have signed 98 agreements, with the following as most significant:
- Agreement on Economic Cooperation between the FPRY and the FR of Germany;
- Agreement on the regulation of employment of Yugoslav workers in FR Germany;
- Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany on cooperation in the field of culture, education and science;
- Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany on the establishment of the "German-Serbian Chamber of Commerce Abroad" in Belgrade;
- Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany on cooperation in the field of security.
