VISA REGIME

ENTERING AND LEAVING THE COUNTRY
Citizens of the Republic of Serbia require a visa to enter Burundi. Visas for entering Burundi are obtained at the Embassy of Burundi in Paris, France (telephone number: 00 331 45 20 60 61, fax: 00 331 45 20 03 11).
The cost of a single-entry/exit visa is USD 60, whereas multiple-entry/exit visas for up to 90 days cost USD 70 (the amounts vary from country to country, where Burundi has representative offices). Obtaining a visa requires holding a “yellow card” from the World Health Organization (vaccine against yellow fever). For tourism purposes, the passport must be valid for at least six months after the planned travel date, and the same applies to regulating residence in this country.
A total of 200 cigarettes and 1 litre of alcoholic beverage may be brought into the country. Importing narcotics, pornographic material or firearms is prohibited. The export of live animals, as well as products made of protected animal species (hide, coral, ivory, etc.) is prohibited and may lead to a prison sentence.

HEALTH SITUATION
It is recommended to check the current health situation in the country, on the website of the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for Africa: www.afro.who.int/health-topics, before travelling.
In addition to yellow fever, there is a risk of malaria in the lowlands, as well as risk of insect or reptile bites, jaundice, hepatitis, cholera, amoebas, aquatic worms, etc. Persons unaccustomed to high altitudes may experience altitude sickness. There is a risk of sexually transmitted diseases. Only bottled water is used for drinking. SECURITY SITUATION — Citizens of the Republic of Serbia are advised to exercise caution and to monitor information on the security situation before travelling and during their stay in the country. Accommodation in hotels in the capital of Bujumbura is safe. Cases of muggings, (armed) robberies, kidnappings, etc. are possible. Travellers should exercise caution against pickpockets and theft in places with large crowds.

TRANSPORT — The only international airport in Burundi is in the capital of Bujumbura. There is no railway network. Due to the underdeveloped road network the use of all-terrain vehicles is recommended. Local buses can be used for travelling between settlements. Driving in Burundi is on the right-hand side.

OTHER — When travelling to Burundi, it is recommended to use tourist agencies, while individual travel requires thorough preparation and information.
In addition to the local language, French is the most widely used language in Burundi.
The national currency of Burundi is the Burundian franc (BIF). The possibility of using credit cards is limited and should be checked prior to travel. Payment cards are accepted in most hotels and leading restaurants in Bujumbura. Money can be easily exchanged in exchange offices.
