Obtaining a visa at the airport in Afghanistan or at border crossings is not possible, so it is mandatory to obtain a visa in advance at the diplomatic and consular missions of Afghanistan.

HEALTH SITUATION — Vaccines against hepatitis A, hepatitis B, tetanus, typhus, poliomyelitis or polio, rubella, Japanese encephalitis, meningitis, rabies, are recommended.

It is obligatory to take preventive measures against mosquito-borne diseases and to take appropriate precautions when consuming water and food.

SECURITY SITUATION — Afghanistan is an area with an extremely high level of threat to personal security. Almost every day there are various acts of violence that often have the ultimate goal of injuring or killing foreign nationals. All foreign citizens must adhere strictly to the security rules of their employer organisations, which, among other things, include instructions regarding movement, transport, stay, mutual communication and taking measures to protect foreign citizens during their stay in Afghanistan.
Afghanistan is an earthquake-prone seismic area. In the event of an earthquake, it is necessary to follow the instructions of the local authorities and act in accordance with them.

OTHER INFORMATION — The official currency of Afghanistan is the Afghani (AFN). Given that the banking system and payment operations in Afghanistan are poorly developed, the most practical means of payment is cash, and for security reasons it is advisable to avoid carrying large amounts of money on your person. Most goods and services can be paid for in US dollars, which can be exchanged for local currency at banks or from street vendors.

Afghanistan is characterised by an extremely traditional culture of behaviour, which is especially reflected in the position of and attitude towards women. Contact between a man and a woman who are not related to each other is generally kept to a minimum. In such circumstances, foreign women, although not required by current regulations, wear headscarves in their daily lives, as otherwise they would attract huge attention from local men and put themselves in an awkward and potentially unsafe situation. In rural areas, the appearance of a woman without a headscarf would be considered a scandal. The choice of clothing must also be adapted to local circumstances and include clothing that covers one’s arms and legs and in no case should outline the body. A handshake between a man and a woman is generally not practiced.
