Inappropriate messages from Croatia

23. Jan 2025.
It is inappropriate for state officials and political actors in Croatia to accuse Serbia today of endangering the freedom of movement and speech of several Croatian citizens, who were treated in Belgrade by the competent state authorities in accordance with legal procedures and customary international practice.

The inappropriateness escalates into absurdity considering that Serbian citizens in Croatia are often treated in ways that are neither in accordance with the law, European values and standards, nor with common sense.

We remind that none other than the President of the Republic of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, was denied the opportunity to pay respects at Jasenovac to the victims of Ustasha terror, among whom were also his ancestors.

Ordinary Serbian citizens encounter even worse treatment, often being targets of insults and attacks by individuals in Croatia, but also of legal violence backed by the state. For instance, a Belgrade lawyer Nemanja Berić was sentenced to 15 days in prison for a social media post.

The question that the Republic of Croatia needs to answer to its public is why no other Croatian citizens currently residing in the territory of the Republic of Serbia are experiencing any inconveniences or special treatment but are welcome guests of our country. However, that answer must also include information about what the individuals who are the subject of reactions from part of the Croatian political public were doing in Serbia.

The Republic of Serbia remains interested in building harmonious and productive relations with all its neighbors, including the Republic of Croatia. However, such relations must be built on mutual effort, not daily public messages that foster an anti-Serbian sentiment in Croatia, and certainly not through crude interference in the political processes in the neighboring country.
