USEFUL INFORMATION
HEALTH SITUATION — Travellers are advised to check before their trip the current health situation at the website of the World Health Organization, Regional Office for Africa: www.afro.who.int/health-topics.
In certain western parts of the country and coast there is a risk of malaria, insect and reptile stings and bites, jaundice, hepatitis, cholera, etc. Yellow fever vaccination is not necessary if arriving from Europe — but it is necessary only if entering Kenya through Ethiopia and other Sub-Saharan African countries. Persons who are not used to high altitudes, may suffer from altitude sickness. Approximately 6% of the population are infected with HIV. It is safe to drink only bottled water.
Please note, travelers arriving with flu-like symptoms will be required to fill the passenger locator form on the ‘jitenge’ platform: https://ears.health.go.ke/airline_registration/. They will also be required to undergo a rapid antigen test at their own cost. Those who test positive on antigen RDT will be required to take a PCR test at their own cost. Those with severe symptoms shall then be allowed to isolate as per the prevailing isolation requirements for mild, moderate and severe disease.
SECURITY SITUATION — The overall security situation is stable. Kenya is a tourist destination and stay in safari parks and coastal resorts is, as a rule, safe and pleasant. Citizens of the Republic of Serbia who are staying in or intend to travel to Kenya, should exercise caution, monitor information on the security situation in the country, follow instructions of the local authorities and, if necessary, cooperate with them. It is recommended to citizens of the Republic of Serbia to avoid travelling to the North Eastern Province, along the border with Somalia, i.e. counties of Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, including cities of El Wak, Wajir, Garissa, Mandera and Libon, coastal counties Tana River, Lamu and the Kilifi County, north of Malindi and Eastleigh, the Nairobi east neighbourhood, due to terrorist activities of the Somali Al Shabaab group. Visit to the old Mombasa town is recommended only during daytime. Trips with the Likoni ferry should be avoided. There is a risk of terrorist and armed attacks, kidnapping, robberies, and petty thefts. In hotels and other tourist complexes security is good. Visits to distant rural areas should be avoided. Night walks and walks in crowded places are not recommended (local open markets and the like), where travellers should beware of pickpockets.
TRANSPORT — Beside the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, there is also the Daniel arap Moi Airport in Mombasa and Eldoret Airport, as well as several local airports at tourist destinations in safari parks and coastal resorts. Travelling between cities and other tourist destinations (national parks, coast, etc.) is possible by airplane, train, bus, and car. Since 2017, it has been possible to travel on the route Nairobi―Mombasa by new high-speed rail, and the trip lasts approximately five hours. On the main routes, such as Nairobi―Mombasa―Kisumu, roads are good. To go to other destinations driving a field vehicle is recommended. Kenyans drives on the left-hand side and cars can be rented from all major international rent-a-car companies. Driving conditions require increased caution given the huge traffic jams and widespread non-compliance with traffic laws. Most of the cities are connected through a network of local bus lines. Public transport in the cities is not well organised, thus taxi services are recommended. Vigilance is recommended while driving.
During their tourist stay in Kenya, citizens of the Republic of Serbia may drive with the international driving permit. The signed Agreement on the Mutual Recognition and Exchange of Driver’s Licences with Kenya allows persons with regulated stay in Kenya to exchange their Serbian driver’s licence for the Kenyan one, without re-taking the driving test.
OTHER INFORMATION — The national currency in Kenya is the Kenyan shilling (KES). There are frequent fluctuations in exchange rates due to the situation at the world stock exchanges. Using international payment cards (VISA and the like) in Kenya is customary, particularly in higher level hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, etc. Only the new US dollar notes may be exchanged.
Mobile phones work without problems. There are no specific dress codes or rules of behaviour that must be observed. Kenya has a pleasant climate during the whole year, with temperature averaging between 20°C and 25°C.
Because of its ocean coast, beautiful nature and safaris, Kenya is a popular destination, especially for tourists coming from Western Europe. For this reason, tourists coming from the Republic of Serbia are advised to use the services of travel agencies or make detailed planning of their individual travel. In Kenya, the official languages are Swahili and English.
