Assistant Minister Ivančić at Conference on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons
During the general debate, Minister Ivančić particularly emphasized that the Treaty remained a key normative mechanism for the prevention of misuse of nuclear energy and that the full respect and implementation of all agreements made at the previous Review Conferences were key to ensuring a peaceful and safe world.
Informing the participants of the efforts of Serbia to meet our obligations under the Treaty, on both national and international level, the Assistant Minister Ivančić emphasized that Serbia advocated for the prevention of further proliferation of nuclear weapons, gradual abandonment of nuclear weapons by the world’s nuclear powers and use of nuclear energy only for peacetime purposes.
The Assistant Minister Ivančić concluded that Serbia should, as before, remain a constructive partner in advocating for a peaceful and safe world, by obeying key international instruments in the areas of arms control and disarmament.
The Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons was signed on the 1 July 1968 and became effective as at 5 May 1970. By the Declaration of Successor of 29 August 2001, Serbia became a party to the Treaty. Review Conferences are meetings of the states that are parties to the Treaty, at the highest level. The Conferences are held every five years and include discussions on the topic if fulfilment of obligations under the Treaty and/or the most relevant matters in that area.
