25. Apr 2025.
The Secretary General of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia, Dušan Kozarev, emphasized today that “Serbia remains firmly committed to preserving peace and stability in the region, while continuing its path of economic development and European integration,” during his meeting with H.E. Martijn Elgersma, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Serbia.

Kozarev underlined that the newly formed Government of Serbia has placed the country’s progress on the path to EU membership high on its agenda, and that the support of the Netherlands in this process is of immense importance.

Although Serbia and the Netherlands do not share the same position on certain issues, both sides noted the existence of many areas of mutual interest in which bilateral relations can be further strengthened.

Taking into account the significant presence of Dutch companies in Serbia, both the Secretary General and the Ambassador agreed that enhancing economic cooperation contributes to deeper ties between the two countries at all levels.

With regard to the current political situation in Serbia, Kozarev stated that the Government remains stronlgy committed to dialogue and the pursuit of constructive solutions, stressing that both sides must be present at the negotiating table.

Referring to the recent tragedy in Novi Sad, in which sixteen families lost their loved ones, Kozarev noted that the entire society has been deeply shaken. He emphasized that the state has acted with full responsibility and transparency, insisting on accountability for all individuals—regardless of their position—who are proven to have violated the law.

On the other hand, the Secretary General noted the existence of political motives behind recent developments, particularly concerning the blockade of the national public broadcaster (RTS), which he described as being contrary to all democratic principles and international standards.

The interlocutors also exchanged views on regional developments, with particular focus on the situation in Bosnia and Herzegovina. In this context, Kozarev reiterated Serbia’s commitment to upholding the Dayton Peace Agreement, as well as the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Bosnia and Herzegovina, while also supporting the constitutional competences of all its constituent entities.

Both sides agreed that Serbia’s consistent efforts to promote peace and stability in the region, as well as its advocacy for constructive dialogue with neighboring countries, are of fundamental importance.

Touching on the situation in Kosovo and Metohija, Kozarev informed the Ambassador about the extremely difficult circumstances facing the Serbian population, whose basic human and political rights are being continuously violated.

He stressed that the Kurti administration’s unilateral actions—including politically motivated arrests and the closure of Serbian institutions in Kosovo and Metohija—have gravely undermined the normalization process between Belgrade and Priština.

Recognizing the many examples of successful cooperation between Serbia and the Netherlands, the interlocutors expressed their conviction that both countries will continue working toward fostering a positive atmosphere and further developing good and partnership-based relations.

Ambassador Elgersma expressed his satisfaction with his posting in Serbia, noting that the country is home to sincere and open-hearted people, as well as to beautiful nature.
